2016 Tax Deadline

Section 7503 of the Tax Code provides that when April 15 falls on a Saturday, Sunday or a legal holiday, that a federal tax return is considered timely filed if it is filed on the next day that is not a Saturday, Sunday or legal holiday. The term “legal holiday” includes federal holidays and legal holidays observed in the District of Columbia.

Emancipation Day , April 16, is a legal holiday in the District of Colombia (D.C.). When April 16 is a Saturday, the preceding day (Friday) is the observed holiday and when it is a Sunday, the succeeding day (Monday) is the observed holiday.

In 2016, the District of Columbia observes Emancipation Day on April 15. As a result, the ordinary due date for filing a tax year 2015 Tax Return (Federal) is Monday, April 18.
