Do you have unfiled tax returns? Are you concerned you might owe back taxes to the IRS? Are you looking for help?

If you have answered yes to any of these questions, you are not alone. The good news is that there’s a way to get compliant while avoiding IRS late filing penalties. We have helped thousands of American expats catch up with their late filing this way. Here’s what you need to know to protect yourself from the IRS and get compliant.

The rules

The U.S. has a citizenship-based taxation system, which means that all American citizens are required to file U.S. federal taxes every year reporting their worldwide income, wherever they happen to reside and even if they have to file or pay foreign taxes too.

To avoid double taxation, when expats file, they can claim a number of exclusions and credits. They sometimes even end up with a refund.

At Tax Samaritan, we can help

The IRS allows U.S. taxpayers to come into compliance through the use of a streamlined filing procedure. The program allows taxpayers to come into compliance by filing the last three years of delinquent or amended returns, and six years of delinquent or amended FBARs (Foreign Bank Account Reports). To qualify, expats must not have already been contacted by the IRS and they must certify that their previous failure to file was not willful.
